Abraham's Promised Son

Genesis 15- 22
A long time ago, there live a man named Abram. He had a wife named Sarai. They were disappointed because they did not have any children. Now they we getting very old and Abraham wondered who would inherit his belongings and his blessings from God. Abram cried out to God: 'O Sovereign Lord, what good are all your blessings when I don't even have a son? Since You have given me no children;... a servant in my household will inherit all my wealth.' And then the Lord said to him, 'No your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.
Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him,

'Look up into the sky, and count the stars if you can.
That is how many descendants you will have.'
 And Abram believed the Lord,
and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith."
Genesis 15:1-6 NLT
Even though many years went by after God promised this to Abram, he still believed God could keep His promise. When Abram was 99 the Lord appeared to him. He changed his name from Abram to Abraham and said: "... you will be the father of many nations... and kings will be among them." Genesis 17:5, 6 Then God changed Sarah's name from Sarai to Sarah and said: "...I will bless her and give you a son from her!...she will become the mother of many nations." 17:15, 16
Later the Lord said to Abraham. "I will return to you about this time next year and Sarah will have a son!" Sarah was listening to this and laughed to herself. The Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say 'Can an old woman like me have a baby?'

Is anything too hard for the Lord?"
18:10-14
"The Lord kept His word
and did for Sarah exactly what He had promised.

She became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham in His old age.
This happened at just the time God said it would. And Abraham named their son Isaac... Abraham was 100 years old (and Sarah was 90) when Isaac was born.", 21:1-5

What a miracle!!! A man 100 years old and a woman 90 could have a baby! This son would be the son of God's promise to Abraham. Through this son many nations would come about and many kings would be their descendants. Tomorrow we will talk about another miraculous birth and one of the most important kings.

"And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed,
because you have obeyed Me."
Genesis 22:18

  • How can this be, that all nations of the earth will be blessed through Abraham's son Isaac?
  • Why did God bless Abraham this way?
  • How was Abraham's faith tested?
  • What was his reward?
  • What ways can you believe God and obey Him?
  • Is anything too hard for the Lord?
