Make an Advent Wreath

Make a Wreath
Through out history circular Advent wreaths have been made from various fresh cut greenery such as fir, pine, holly, and laurel, as well as any other evergreen. You can also find a variety of artificial greenery in craft stores; which is nice because they don't wilt and dry out. To make things simple we have used various pre-made wreaths over the years.

Find a place to put your wreath where it won't need to be moved. Your dining table where you eat and spend time together is the perfect place. Next, you will need 5 candle holders that you can place inside the wreath; four around the inside or outside of the greenery and 1 in the middle; and 5 tall candles. * You can use various colors. We used red around and white in the middle for the Christ candle. There are also other colors (purple, blue and pink) with symbolic meaning. I am doing purple and pink this year. Check What is Advent, colors of candles for more info. *Or check Advent Wreaths on Amazon to buy one. I have a couple coming soon, one for $22.95 and another for $7.49

On the first Sunday of Advent you light one of the outside candles for your celebration together. We would light the same candle each evening during the week. One the following Sunday, you light a new candle and the one from the previous week. Light an additional candle in the wreath each week as you gather for your family Advent worship. Each candle you add will bring more light to your celebration! :) The soft flickering light will help you and your kids to focus on the Light of the World. The candle light also provides a warm, calming environment to prepare your hearts for this year's celebration of Christ's coming.

We purchased a lighter and a candle snuffer. The kids loved to take turns lighting and snuffing the candles at the end of our time together.

Note: Any time you are using candles and fire make your children aware of the dangers and to use caution when the candles are lit. If you are using real greenery be aware that they become a serious fire hazard as they dry out. I am careful even with artificial greenery.
