God Created

Today's Reading: Genesis 1

The story of the coming of Christ is written in the Bible from the very beginning, from the first page to last. There are many places that speak of Jesus being right with God in the very beginning. Look at what Jesus' friend John says. He calls Jesus the Word and says,

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made."
John 1:1-3 NKJ

So now beginning in Genesis we read:

 "In the beginning God created
the heavens and the earth.
The earth was formless and empty,
and darkness covered the deep waters.
And the Spirit of God
was hovering over
the surface of the waters.
Then God said 'Let there be light,'
and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good.
Then he separated the light
from the darkness.
God called the light 'day' and the darkness 'night'.
  Verses 1-3 NLT

God created the sky, all of space and the earth. He spoke light into existance, plants, the sun, the moon and the stars. And He said that everything was good. In your mind, think about how beautiful is God's creation... the wonder of the universe, a star-lit sky, a full moon casting shadows across your lawn in the middle of the night, the rain pouring down on your roof, a glorious sunrise or sunset. Does this tell us what God is like? Read More:
God created living things,

"great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water,
every sort of bird"... He also created all sorts of animals,
"livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals...
and God saw that it was good."
Verses 21-25

Think about all the beautiful, amazing animals and creatures that He made... from the tiniest bug that can fly around in your yard, to the greatest whale that migrates in the sea. He said that everything He created was good. He is good and we see His goodness, His character in what He made.

"For ever since the world was created,
people have seen the earth and the sky.
Through everything God made,
they can clearly see His invisible qualities -
his eternal power and divine nature.
So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
Romans 1:20 NLT
When you think about what God has made, does it tell you about the kind of person that He is?

"Then God said,
Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;
In the image of God He created them;
male and female He created them.
Then God blessed them and said
'Be fruitful and multiply.
Fill the earth and govern it.
Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky,
and all the animals that scurry along the ground."
Verses 26-28 NKJ, NLT

God created us human beings, you and me, in His own likeness. We were different than all the other animals in that we were made to be like Him and to have a relationship with Him. God blessed us and told us to have lots of kids, to fill the earth with people and He assigned us to take good care of the earth and the creatures who live on it. David said this when he considered how God created him:

"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mothers womb
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous -  how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
How precious are Your thoughts about me, O God!
Psalm 139: 13-18 NLT

David found joy, peace and comfort knowing how much God loves and cares about Him.

God said,  "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. Do the words us and our mean one or more people? More, huh? Jesus was there, in the very beginning. :-)
This is the beginning of our story about this child we read about last night.

Come before God in prayer and thank Him for His beautiful creation.
Look out at the night sky.
Can you see His eternal power and the beauty of His character in what He has made.

PS Are you wondering "Hmm, I thought Advent was about the coming of Jesus. Why are we reading about Creation"? Well the coming of Jesus is a very big story, that started with creation. As the days go by, I hope you will see the importance of this.
